We are nearing the Michigan Fall wedding season, and if you are from the area, you know that it gets crazy. This is a great time to start thinking out the smaller details of your wedding day (like wedding invitations) – the big stuff should already be done! And if you’re not a 2023 fall wedding couple? Maybe your wedding is a little farther out? Well, you better believe there’s some good information for you too!
Basic Invite has invited me once again to feature some of their amazing wedding invitations and I’m so happy to do so! I love having the opportunity to practice some flat lay work with their custom invitations AND give you an opportunity to order for yourself!
Amid all of the very important items that you know you have to bring on wedding day – dress, flowers, rings – there are a few things that will make your photographer’s life easier during those detail photos and ensure that you get the best images of the finer details of your day.
Upon arrival, we will be capturing your bridal detail shots. What does this mean? All the tiny details that are special to you and your day! Here are some things that you should have on hand:
For detail shots, have your flowers, jewelry, rings, shoes, accessories and dress all in one spot, ready to go for your photographer to grab when they arrive.
A little box or bag with everything – even your shoe box – will really help out when transporting these for photos.

Wedding invitations may seem like a small thing, but when looking back on a wedding day, you’ll want to see all the little parts that brought the whole thing together. Personally, I love when couples go the extra mile to put together a cohesive style for their wedding stationary and their day in general. Finding a “just-right” wedding invitation template to use is key to setting the tone for the vibe of the wedding day.
The next best thing that can be done to really set the vibe of your wedding day photos is to ensure that your photographer adds those little touches to your invitation suite flat lay – extra greenery or florals from your florist, raw edged ribbon, and velvet ring boxes, just to name a few.
I’ve loved when couples send me with their sentimental items to add in as well – grandma’s rosary, dad’s cufflinks and a custom handkerchief have all been perfect additions at past weddings.
As your photographer, it’s my duty to be sure that all the special little moments, details, and events that you’ve worked so hard to bring together are captured in a precisely curated fashion for you to remember forever. This is why I always ask for a copy of your wedding invitation and save the date.
If you’re still in the planning phases – don’t worry. Custom samples are so easy to get. For the flat lays in this blog post, I ordered the parts of a wedding suite that best fit with what I see my couples using on a regular basis, plus some fun examples that I would love to photograph at a real-life wedding.
As a person getting ready to tie the knot, I’m sure the arrival of the photographer can seem like a huge event that you have to be ready for and I’m not saying that it’s not true! However, it’s definitely not something that I want any of my couples worrying about on the big day. For this reason, I suggest collecting your wedding day details (all listed above) and putting them in a shoe box or little bag for easy access when I arrive. I would even go so far as to say to lay this box/bag right near your dress or wedding outfit along with your shoes, so your photographer can just grab and go, without needing to send bridal party members running around looking for that one bracelet you are pretty sure you brought with you.
Once I grab your detail items, this is how my routine goes:
Chances are, I’ll be searching for a nearby location that amplifies your details and makes them shine. I love finding some marble or wood floors to play with, bookshelves, paintings and chandeliers are also favorites. In a pinch, a good ol’ windowsill will do the trick. This is why you hire your photographer – we tend to have an eye for these things and over time, you get really good at quickly navigating the lay of the land and finding the best little spots for detail shots.
While I do work very closely with my wedding couples to create a seamless timeline and be sure that they know what is happening and when, it’s always nice to get to learn a little bit about what is going on behind the scenes – even if it’s happening right in front of you, like with the detail shots! It’s a part of the day that couples are not quite involved in, so the process always ends up being a mysterious one and one that you’re likely to forget ever happened.
