If you’re in the midst of wedding planning, one of the top items on your list should be the bridal suite. This is the place where you and your bridal party will spend time getting ready for the day – hair, makeup, the works. But what makes a gorgeous, photo-ready bridal suite and getting-ready space?
One of my number one, all time favorite things that could ever be in a bridal suite is a huge window. Heck, if there are more than one window, that’s even better. Here’s what they can do for your space:
Your beauty team has their own lights, sure. But what do they all crave? Natural light! By working in natural light from a large window, your makeup and hair teams can ensure that your face is going to be glowing and gorgeous when you’re having your photos taken.
Windows in the bridal suite lend so much to a space. Creatively-speaking, there are so many ways that they can be incorporated into photos. One of my fave things to do with windows? Hang the wedding dress in them for those WOW factor dress shots!
Windows that start at the ceiling and go all the way to dang-near the floor, fill the room with the best natural light are my favorite. I like to bring along a command hook for situations like these – so that I can hang the dress right in the window for the ultimate dress shot.
Natural window light is the preferred lighting for most photographers. Why? It gives the space and skin-tones even coverage and brightens in all the right places. This is especially perfect for bridal portraits.
A mirror in the bridal suite is a given – you can’t get ready without it. But a statement mirror? That’s where the fun comes in.
Seeing yourself as a bride for the first time is an emotional moment. It’s one that should be savored and captured. What better place to see yourself in all your bridal glory than a floor length mirror?
As any interior designer will tell you, a mirror can change the shape of a space. It can make small spaces look much bigger than they are and it can brighten an area that may otherwise seem on the darker side.
Last, but certainly not least is this tip: clean up your space! It can be really hard to keep things organized when you are getting your hair and makeup done and there are 8 bridesmaids with all of their stuff in the same room. My suggestion? Designate one person to help ensure that the space stays tidy. This way, there aren’t cell phones, bras, and empty orange juice bottles in your getting ready photos.
At the end of it all, just being conscious of how the space is being used is huge for your photographer. Keep it cleaned up a bit and all will be well. But if you can get that room with a big window (do it).
let's photograph your dream day.
